Server manufacturers have wasted no time in putting the new dual-core server chips from AMD into their products. AMD are initially selling the 800 Series of dual-core Opteron chips for servers with four to eight processors. The prices range from $1,514 per 1,000 for the slowes 1.8GHz 865 to $2,649 per 1,000 for the 2.2GHz 875. HP was first out of the block by putting the chips in its four-way ProLiant DL585 server. Sun will also put it in the four-way V40z. They have chosen to price the boxes in the same way as AMD have done with the chips. I.e. the slowest dual-core machine is the same price as the fastest unicore machine. 2-way servers with the new chips are expected over the Summer. Again with HP in the lead. Dell which is an Intel only vendor, will have to wait until next year, before it can start to offer dual-core in its offerings. |
