Cisco and Adaptive Threat Defence

Cisco, has launched a new phase in network security products. Adaptive Thread Defence (ATD), spans three main areas, "anti-threat" defencts (against viruses or spyware for instance), application security, and network control and containment.

The latest threat, Voice Over IP (VoIP) exploits is currently being worked on.

Application security is dealt with via, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) virtual private network (VPN) services within the Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrator Version 4.7. PIX Security Appliance Software has been upgraded to version 7.0. Cisco IPS v5 and Cisco IOS Software release 12.3(14)T tackles VoIP threats.

Anti-threat defences we have Cisco Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) 5.0; the Cisco Anomaly Guard modue and Cisco Traffic Anomaly Detector module. These are for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches and Cisco 7600 Series routers. Cisco Security Agent (CSA) 4.5 to deal with malware/spyware.

On network control and containment we have Cisco Security Monitoring, Analysis and Response System (CS-MARS) and Security Auditor; virtual firewall capabilities in Cisco PIX Software Version 7.0 and Cisco IOS Release 12.3(14)T; and Network Admission Control (NAC) support in Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrator version 4.7.
